Over
the years, it has become increasingly evident that education is an
essential component in turning any thoughtfully designed mixed-use plan
into reality. To that end, DPZ has
made it a priority to educate the public about the principles and benefits
of New Urbanist planning. In many
communities, a DPZ lecture has proven to be the first significant step in a
local campaign to overcome suburban sprawl.
Andrés
Duany and other senior firm members spend a large portion of their time
traveling the country to lecture and hold seminars on the subject of town
planning principles. This includes
annual courses taught at the Seaside Institute and Harvard University. In addition,
Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk have created a master’s program in
Suburb and Town Design at the University of Miami where Plater-Zyberk serves as dean of the School of Architecture. They have
written several books, including the popularly acclaimed Suburban Nation and The New Civic Art, used by
professionals throughout the industry. Others are in the works, such as The Smart Growth Manual and Lexicon of the New Urbanism.
