Along with plans, renderings and codes, DPZ designers have a
tradition of developing conceptual diagrams, or cartoons, to illustrate
basic planning concepts. The following cartoons by Tom Low offer
representations of traditional neighborhood development schemes, comparing
compact, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood development to traditional
suburban development, or sprawl. By exploring the consequences of
conventional suburban zoning, and the necessity of regional planning,
mixed-use development, infill and transit, the cartoons offer an
introduction to the tenets of New Urbanism.
These cartoons have been published in DPZ charrette reports,
as well as in Suburban Nation, The New Civic Art, and other
publications.
